     Manda

Manda, those big brown eyes
turn me to mush inside.
I am clay in your hands;
your wish is my command.

And I thought my defenses were high,
that I wouldn’t let you inside.
But my walls came tumbling down
as soon as I saw those eyes of brown.

Manda, do you know the power you hold?
I went from not for sale to sold.
I turn to jelly and my knees go weak
when you lay those eyes on me.
CHORUS

Can I write a song for you?

I asked my friend Aliya at the awesome blog Pokemon-personalities for ideas for a new Poke-song. She suggested this post might inspire me, and it did. You know when you are mad—and you want to be mad—but your best friend makes you laugh? When you just can’t help but feel better? I think this image captures that magic. Pikachu was such a good friend for Ash; he never let Ash give up hope. So I wrote a song about their friendship. Can you spot all the Poke-references in the lyrics?      Best Friends

To be the very best, like no one ever was,
we need friends who believe in us
to tell us dreams are like Butterfrees:
they’re only caught in a net that swings.

When our heart is weak, good friends make it beat.
They bolt and shock us with lightning
‘til we believe.

To earn every badge of courage you can
takes a good friend’s helping hand.
On sad days they say, “You won’t catch them all
if you give up throwing the ball.”
CHORUS

‘Cause life’s an adventure, life’s a quest,
and for it we need friends who are the best.

Reposting my song about crying to heal, on request from my friend Victoria at victoria-free. — Kavalier Calm

     Cry, Baby, Cry

I won’t pretend to know how it feels.
But, darlin’, I swear I’ve been hurt, too.
If life’s got you down,
then there’s only one thing left to do.

Cry, baby, cry, baby, cry.
Let it all out and let me in.
And I will soak up your tears.

Bottle it up if you wish,
but don’t act surprised when you explode.
You think it’s a sign of weakness,
but only the brave lighten their load.
CHORUS

Just let them fall, let your tears fall.

Tonight’s song and video are for the beautiful Erica at puresighs. We both wish we lived in Paris, we both wish we were yellow roses instead of thorns, we both see people as Sylvia Plath did in The Bell Jar. We are sick in the same way…I think. I’m dedicating this audio post to Alyssa and her awesome blog see-you-forever. I’d like to try and give a girl like her enough. Free downloads of this song are here (just enter $0 as the price). Much love. — Kavalier Calm

     Enough

Baby girl, you are just what I want.
Don’t worry now I’m not asking for much.
Just give me all of your time and love,
and in return, I’ll give you enough—
enough to satisfy your needs.

Finding you was like finding gold in a mine.
My life was dark and lonely before your light.
Let me wear you like a jewel up above,
CHORUS

I bet you have a dark and deep soul,
just like your eyes, your two windows.
Let me speak to your heart’s gentle hush,
CHORUS

Tonight’s song “Love on Hold” is in response to three wonderful song requests. The blogger at lastwinterat-thebeach said, “you should try writing a song about making a difficult love work.” The blogger at shufflespheres told me a story of unrequited love and asked that I write about the pain, a “pain that I perhaps should leave behind,” using minor and major sections (A minor for verses, relative C major for chorus). And my dear muse Sarah at miss-sarah-louise-dances challenged me to write about “patience vs. impatience” and “how difficult it is to wait for what we want.” Thanks for the lovely requests, and thanks for listening everyone. Much love. — Kavalier Calm

     Stone Heart

God, I know it’s been said before,
but there’s ice inside of your soul.
How can you say you’re all alone?
I tried to open your stone,
your stone heart
with my bare hands
until they were bloody and raw.

You would be the first to admit
the flame of your soul was never lit.
How can you say you’re all alone?
I tried to open your stone,
your stone heart
with my bare hands
until they were bloody and raw.

Tonight’s tune is for Carson at carsontheasian. He told me a story about a girl at his school. When they first met, they didn’t like each other. But they got assigned to the same table in class, and he slowly fell in love with her. He doesn’t know how she feels about him yet. So let’s all hope the chorus in my song is true, okay? Much love. — Kavalier Calm

     Despite Your Cool

When we first met, we didn’t think much.
You seemed cruel, and I seemed dumb.
But at one table we got stuck,
and now something has begun.

Despite your cool, I know you will fall for me.

When it came, it started slow.
Now thoughts of you are in my bones.
And you can feel our new flame grow,
but you look at me like: “So what?”

Madison at sunshine0009 told me her birthday is this week and asked me to write a song about growing up and realizing you won’t be a kid forever. My birthday happens to be next week, and I’ve been thinking about this a lot myself. So I wrote this. Thanks for inspiring me, Madison! Enjoy, everyone. — Kavalier Calm

Kids Have All The Good Times

When I blow out the candles on my birthday,
I always wish for the same thing:
I want to be one year younger, one year less wise
‘cause kids have all the good times.

Each year I age, I get one more bill.
Responsibilities take life’s thrill.
Going gray is sad, and I know why:
‘cause kids have all the good times.

None of us ever heed the warning.
Grownups told us growing up is boring.
Now I hate my plain, dull life
‘cause kids have all the good times.

Being older seems to have its perks.
We all race towards a home, a car, and work.
But why do you think adults always sigh?
‘Cause kids have all the good times.

     More Than Pretend

When we met, you were so happy
to meet someone who could play Vash the Stampede.
When we met, I was just happy
that somebody was talking to me.

When we’re together, we play hero and heroine.
But just once I want to play boyfriend and girlfriend.
How do I tell you my love is more than pretend?

We’ve been Aerith and Cloud, Ash and Misty;
we’ve gone to Comic-con and costume parties.
You do my make up, and I dye your hair.
You laugh as I brush it with my hands.
CHORUS

And you try on your costumes right in front of me.
Do you think I’m a robot? That I don’t have feelings?
Well, I can compute every last inch of you,
and it fills me with joy, and it fills me with hunger.
A hunger to be real.

So I go online and buy a bow and arrow,
a pair of gold boots, and little wings.
And I go to your room, and I sit you down,
and at the top of my Cupid lungs, I sing:
CHORUS
Do you understand? This isn’t pretend.

And you grab an arrow out of my quiver,
tuck it under your arm and say, “Yes.”
And you give me a hug and a kiss on the neck,
and then I know that we’re more than pretend.

This tune is for the lovely Erin Catherine Dorothy. She said, “I’m looking to find freedom from the tiny confined town I live in.” I understand that feeling, Erin, and when you leave, I want to go with you. I’m not at home, so I could only record this with my laptop’s junky internal microphone…and a child-sized guitar I found with only three strings. Perfect. Enjoy, friends. — Kavalier Calm

     You Want To Live

Well, you want out of this small town.
You want to show everyone the world is round.
Even if the edge is a cliff,
you want to live.

And I want to live with you.

You think you were born at the wrong time.
You dream of better decades as you sigh.
Even if this age would be missed,
you want to live.

And I want to live with you.
