I wrote a song for Denny’s. Sorry. I get a little emotional about my cured meats. — KC

         Bacon

Doc says my heart can’t handle it.
My diet is too high in fat.
What’s a man supposed to do
when bacon is his favorite food group?
Now I don’t mind a little green on my plate,
but I live for an oinker’s taste.
What’s a man supposed to do
when bacon is his favorite food group?
Eat at Denny’s until his life is through.

Free downloads of this song are here!

They actually reblogged it…thanks for all the positive feedback fellow Denny’s and bacon lovers. I made the song available for free download. See the link above. — KC

I recently met Jessica, and she told me about her blog Hashtag Hearts where she posts couples’ love stories. We agreed it would be fun if I wrote songs about some of the stories, and Virginia and Forrest’s definitely jumped out at me. Virginia sees their meeting as fate, and I can’t help but agree that a bunch of small things had to happen just right for them to ever meet. Everyone’s love story is like that, and that’s what makes love so special. I was thinking about how special this is, and this little song just plopped out of my head. The lyrics are built around the concept of fate, and I included small details from their story like the “hurdle” the heart jumps (because Virginia is a track and field athlete) and the metaphor about an island at sea (because they met at a beach). I hope you enjoy it, friends. Free downloads of this song are on my Bandcamp page here. If you like my work, please like my musicians page on Facebook and send me a message about it. Much, much love! — Kavalier

         Fate

I don’t know who to thank for meeting you.
Lots of small moments added up to make us two.
Somehow it feels like it was always meant to be.
That’s why if you look up “fate” in the dictionary, you’ll see:
    you and me.

We grew up thousands of miles apart,
each and every one a hurdle for the heart.
But some magic magnet pulled you to me.
    CHORUS

I was just a tiny island in the sea,
prepared to live the long life of the lonely.
But of all the shores, you washed up on my beach.
    CHORUS

I stared at pictures of the blogger at bakaguts and brainstormed—with lots of mind-thunder and lightning—and when the storm calmed, this song was playing softly. Much love. — Kavalier

         Your Parts

Do those brown eyes see what they do to me?
Does that soft skin feel the rhythm in my chest?
'Cause you don't know the power of your parts
and how they weigh on my heart.
Do those ears hear how my body screams?
Does that mind think about being with me?
    CHORUS

I wrote a sad song about love tonight. Surprise, surprise. Enjoy, friends. — KC

You Aren’t The One She Wants

Maybe it’s the way I talk: I mean what I say.
Maybe it’s the way I quiet when the world is gray.

I can hear the voice in my head:
you aren’t the one she wants.

Maybe it’s the way I want what’s skin deep.
Maybe it’s the way I wear my heart on my sleeve.
    CHORUS

    Maybe I’ll survive.
    But maybe she’s just right
    for me.
    CHORUS

The blogger over at mylittleheart-x told me she is struggling to choose between two loves (which is lucky, really, because most of us can’t even find one). I decided to write a song about the problem with having to make such a choice—about, naturally, wanting to keep both. Again, I’ve been playing with Fruity Loops to build fuller songs; I enjoy the individual tracks, but their melding is a bit clumsy. Learning, learning. Enjoy, friends. Much love. — Kavalier

         Don’t Make Me Choose

    I’ve got options:
    one in the left hand,
    one in the right,
    and I shouldn’t take both,
    but I might.

I can flip a coin or draw straws,
but I’d rather be greedy and have it all.
    Girls don’t make me choose
    between you or you.

    Try choosing between
water or air, heart or mind—
a man needs both to survive,
and I need you both at night.
    CHORUS

    For so long it was just little old me;
now I have more than I could ever need.
    CHORUS

Tonight’s song is for Karin at thebegreen. She told me how she barely escaped a dangerous relationship, and how she found a new, wonderful one. The first verse of this song uses words written by her new partner. I wish them both the best. Free downloads of this song are here (just enter $0 as the price). Much love, all. — Kavalier Calm

         Even If It Takes

I wish time wasn’t so thin.
Forgive me if I sound intense,
but there is something about you,
and I will find out what it is

even if it takes all night—
even if it takes my whole life.

I had hands before they touched your skin,
    but they were wasted.
    Let them search your length
    to find what beauty is

even if it takes all night—
even if it takes my whole life.

Even if it takes all my strength,
even if it makes my heart break,
I want to learn all of you.

        Weak

Well, you don’t see what I see
when you look in the mirror.
Beauty comes so easy to you,
you think it can’t be true,
but you make me weak at the knees.
    You make me weak.

I am sand on the shore of your grace,
and I want you to make a castle out of me.
    Shape me as you please, oh as you will;
just let me feel your hands.
You make me weak at the knees.
    You make me weak.

Followers, have you ever been in a love like this? Have you ever been trapped in the #friendzone, but it was your own, stupid fault? — KC

         Feelings Like This

He’s the boy of every girl’s dreams:
you can take him home to mom; you can take him in your sheets.
She’s beautiful in a small and shy way:
she’s realer than the rest, not another bitch, Barbie.

They’ve been friends for far too long.
Love’s come upon them like sleep: slow, then all at once.
    They believe they control their feelings;
but feelings like this, they control you.

They try and play dumb, but they can feel the change.
They deny it to their friends, say things are still the same.
But how about that first kiss? And the second one, too?
Is that something “just friends” do?
    CHORUS

His mind flip flops like a fish on land,
and she’s too scared to put the truth in his hands.
    They go back and forth between a laugh and a fight;
they won’t admit that this happiness is right.
    CHORUS

The blogger at keepcalm-and-floaton asked for a song for teachers, so I’m reblogging a tune I wrote for my friend CT's character Michiko—a philosophy teacher with a wonderful heart. This song captures what I think being a good teacher is all about: having a unique personality—to empower students to be their unique selves—and being full of compassion. Much love. — KC

         Teacher

Her teachers were pain and mistake,
and she taught me just one thing:
Make the world a better place
    for at least one.
Do not follow the ideas of others,
    but learn of all things.
How the heart beats and why the heart beats
    are not the same.

When she looked at me through those pink frames,
    I know I saw a raging flame
of love for all things human.

She always acted on raw emotion,
    which she later would regret,
but it’s better to drown in a sea of passion
    than never get wet.
She gave and she gave so much of herself
    because she knew life’s plot:
In a world full of monsters
giving’s the only weapon we got.
    CHORUS
