This song concept was bouncing around in my head for days, and I finally sat down to bleed it out. I realized recently that the majority of songs that the crowd (meaning all of you bloggers) inspires me to write are about loneliness or hunger (in all senses of the word). I am considering releasing digital albums of sets of the songs written for this blog, and this may be the title track for the first such album. I wanted to devote this posting to someone who seems to get the song’s message. I started searching by the tag lonely, and what I read was too gray to mirror the music. Then I realized my tune is actually hopeful. The speaker believes in the power of his voice/music/energy to travel faster than his feet to find his lost lover. So this is a song for a hopeful, loving blogger, like: natalieeelovesyou. And all you lonely bloggers I stumbled upon first—I recommend wallowing in the positive vibe on her blog for awhile.

     Lonely and hungry for you

I waited for you to come home—
years I waited, all alone.
When you didn’t come back, I packed a bag
and started walking down the road.

I didn’t know where you’d gone,
so I wrote this song, just so you’d know:
I’m lonely and hungry for you,
so lonely and hungry for you.

My feet have have covered many miles,
but there are many miles left to go.
I’m gonna use the radio to find you—
‘cause sound travels faster than me.

I don’t know where you’ve gone,
so I wrote this song, just so you’ll know:
CHORUS

Strangers warn me you may be dead,
but you can’t be—I haven’t found you yet.
I don’t know where you’re hiding,
but I’ll seek ‘til my days are long.

I don’t know where you’ve gone,
so I wrote this song, just so you’ll know:
CHORUS

Tonight’s post was inspired by the blogger over at amourdemivida. When I found this blog yesterday, I went delving into its archive; it’s full of wonderful images of love and thoughts about love. The blog’s main title is “Amar es un Verbo.” Such a simple statement, but so true. I think sometimes people think of love as some static thing—an object waiting to be found. But really it is an action, something we each have to do, to make. This should be liberating, really, for all those blindly searching, hoping they’ll just stumble upon it one day. They only need to find someone else who’s ready to do the work, take the necessary actions, and live the verb—a much easier task. Thanks for the inspiration and enjoy!

     Love is a verb

Love is not just a word.
No, it’s a verb,
and I want you to act like you want to be in it with me.

Love is a fuel,
it make me move.
And I’d like to move you with it.

And I refuse to love anyone else but you;
so, Darlin’, you better start lovin’ me.

Love is not just a dream.
No, it’s built on sweat and tears,
and you aren’t putting in the work that I am.

Love is not lazy.
No, it should fill you with a fire.
And it’s crazy how you’re treating me.

CHORUS

Love’s not just a thing to throw away.
No, it’s a treasure chest,
and it’s time to get into it.

Plunder, what we got between us,
and I know you’ll be pleased with
everything I’ve got to offer.

Silent Sister — Tonight’s song is for sisters, especially little sisters. And it’s for big brothers, too. I can’t be the only big brother that has felt this way about watching my sisters grow up. In general, it’s sad how siblings grow distant as they age, considering how close they were when they were younger. That closeness—based purely on common experience—is so rare, too rare to just give up. This song voices a hope for keeping close. Enjoy! — K.C.

     Silent Sister

It’s true what they say,
nothing runs thicker than blood.
We stole cookies from the jar together—
and never told anyone—not even Mom.
I taught you how to tie your shoes
and took the training wheels off your bike.
So I just have one request—
don’t go silent.

Don’t go silent on me, sister.
I’ve always been there for you.
Other boys may come along,
but they don’t know you like I do.

When you had a nightmare,
I’d talk to you until you fell back asleep.
I gave you rides to parties,
and I bought you your first drink.
And the first time a boy made you cry,
I said it was his loss—and meant it.
So I just have one request—
don’t go silent.

CHORUS

Now, this other boy who’s come along,
you tell me you’ve given him your heart.
He understands, and he makes you laugh,
and he’s patching up all your hurt.
But I was first, yes, I was there,
when you became you.
So I just have one request—
don’t go silent.

Clementine recorded tonight’s track in one take and sent it my way. I trust that everyone will appreciate the intimacy of the lyrics and their story as much as I did. This post is dedicated to Andrew at booksandstories for his happy, book-centric spirit. I bet he and other book lovers have experienced this moment in a coffee shop. Were any of you brave enough to talk to the stranger? — K.C.

     Give Me a Minute

When we meet for the first time.
I’ll say the wrong thing,
A terrible joke,
Or nothing at all.

I might hide my face in my hands,
or turn around and leave,
pretend I forgot to turn the oven off,
or my mom’s birthday,
or how to breathe.

But if you give me a minute
to be brave,
I’ll come back.
Give me one more and
I’ll know what to do with my hands.
I’ll point to your book and say,
Any good?

I wrote this song years ago, before the CI project began—before I was smart enough to realize I wanted to write songs every day. It was written for an old roommate, George, after the real scene detailed in the intro took place. Because this song is about finding love—filling your life with light—I devote it to these blogs: bby-leen and itswhatourheartsareallmadeof (for good thoughts on love in general), temporarynostalgia (because your blog is beautiful and because I want to tell you that you don’t have to wait to find him), onbeingcheesyandpathetic (because that’s what this song is being, really), and lastly to commutermusic (because of your blog’s originality!).  Enjoy everyone! — K.C.

     Do I Need A Lamp?

George, you need a light
but not the bulbed kind.
Don’t just get a lamp at Wal-mart
because it’s discount priced.
You need a lantern lady
to brighten up your days.

You’ll see soon enough,
you’ll see in the dark.
If you find a girl of
one million watts.
You need a lantern lady
to brighten up your days.

Don’t hesitate, don’t wait,
everyone is looking.
And it won’t be long
until all the good lights are taken.
Find a lantern lady
to brighten up your days.

Come on everyone,
let’s shed our light on each other.
We don’t need lamps
made in factories in China.

Come on everyone,
shed your light.

Eli wanted to write a song about how hard it is to believe in love again after getting hurt—because it is for him. But I challenged him to put himself in the other person’s shoes—write from the perspective of the new lover, the one who’s doubted though they’ve never done anything wrong. I think he learned a lot writing these lyrics. This song is devoted to these bloggers who responded to our post about having a hard time loving again after getting hurt: woodlandcreaturesatemypizza, naturesdopeflow, and hai1337. Eli hopes his upbeat plea rings in your ears. Find love everybody! — K.C.

     How Good It Can Be

You doubt my words, baby,
‘cause you’ve heard them before.
But I’m not here to hurt you then leave.
Oh, your pain runs deep,
and you just can’t believe:
I’m not like all those other boys.
And you’re afraid I’ll ask for control,
but, baby, I won’t have to ask:
you’ll hand it over.
‘Cause I know what you don’t know:
I’m not like all those other boys.

And, sugar, I’d like to show you
how good it can be when you love a man like me.
Baby, you lack imagination;
all those bad men stunted your mind.
So, I’m painting this picture,
so you can see how good it can be.

What’d those men do?
Not return your calls?
Or is it that they called other girls?
Well, I don’t even own a phone;
I’ll just read your thoughts.
Oh, you’ve never been with a boy like me.
Did they show up late at night?
Were they loud and drunk?
Well, for you, I’ll sober up.
And we’ll only be loud at night
when you got that need.
Oh, you’ve never been with a boy like me.

CHORUS

I don’t know how else to promise,
how else to make it clear;
I ain’t going to live up to your fears.
‘Cause I’m a man unlike them.
Oh, you’ve never loved a boy like me.

Okay, speed writing done. Pretty funny song. Meshed the first four responses I saw together into one tune. Firstly it covers all of confused-outta-my-mind’s bases: “love, music, free, fun”. I read pokeopa’s “dinosaurs” and pengwenny’s “traveling, maps, globes, suitcases” at the same time, and instantly thought of Jurassic Park. Like a crazy trip you’d take. But why? Then I read your-new-beginning’s “faith in love again”, and I had my reason and my chorus. A couples retreat at Jurassic Park would be pretty effective I think. Thanks for playing along, bloggers; gems are created by pressure. I really appreciated the other responses, too, and may use them sometime soon. Enjoy everyone! — Kavalier Calm

     Couples Retreat at Jurassic Park

We should have read the fine print
when we signed up for that couples retreat.
The ad said it would challenge us,
but we didn’t know what that means.
Well, we traveled by helo to the far side of the globe,
an island not listed on any map.
And we smiled as the pilot waved goodbye;
we didn’t know we were in a trap.

It wasn’t until we faced death
that we found faith in our love again.

We walked up to the resort house,
but there was no one at the check in desk.
In fact, there was no one in sight;
and thus began our test.
With one giant roar—ROAR,
we turned our heads to the door.
And much to my surprise and yours,
in walked a dinosaur.
CHORUS

I was so scared, I was glad
I remembered to pack extra underwear.
You grabbed my arm, and we screamed
as we high-tailed it out of there.
That dinosaur was in hot pursuit,
and I knew if we kept running, he’d catch you.
I screamed “Go on, I’ll distract him
because only one of us can make it through.”
CHORUS

But you refused to go on without me:
“If one must go, then he gets both.”
And you grabbed my hand and kissed me,
as that dino grew close.
But when that T-Rex was mere feet away,
he powered down like some robot.
The retreat director stepped from the shadows
and said, “Congrats you’re in love.”
CHORUS
