Kavalier Calm's Crowdsource Inspiration

Hi. I'm Kavalier Calm. I write songs and poems inspired by the people I meet on the internet. Ask, and I’ll write something for you. Really.

  • I’ve committed reverse-inspiration. I answered the following question from ttimshel with a song:

    Hypothetically speaking,

if you only had one opportunity to tell someone you loved them before they moved away, would you? if it meant jeopardizing your friendship, putting your real feelings out there, being exposed of the risks involved - they either accept or decline - would you do it?

i am not in this situation but if i were, let’s just say, i wouldn’t know what to do. what would you do

         Worth the risk

    I played out the scene
    a hundred times in my mind;
I got up the courage to tell you
    I wish you were mine.
But you left on that train,
and I haven’t heard from you since.
    Now everyone asks,
"Was it worth losing a friend?"

I say I have no regrets,
and if I could, I’d tell you again.
Love is a reward that’s worth the risk,
a gamble I’ll take again, and again, and again.

When you didn’t say, “I’ll stay,”
I felt the pain on my face,
    but my heart started healing
the moment you stepped on that train.
Better to put you to rest
    than never know.
    A life of “coulda been”
    will rot a soul.

I say I have no regrets,
and if I could, I’d tell you again.
Love is a reward that’s worth the risk,
a gamble I’ll take again, and again, and again.

    The only way we control
    the way our story unfolds
is to be all in with our chips
    on love’s risk.

Tonight’s inspiration comes from a question posted by ccalypso:

What should I do if the guy I’m falling for acts completely different when he’s with his friends?

I don’t know what the asker meant by “completely different,” but I imagined the situation where one person is embarrassed by the relationship for some reason, and so tries to hide the truth of it from friends and family. Still working out the kinks on this Tascam; should probably sing this in another key (and in a room where I don’t have to just whisper because someone else is sleeping haha); but got to go to work in 6 hours, so I had to just get this posted. Enjoy!

         Be your prize

    Baby, I know it’s true:
You like to hold my hand.
    But you act so strange
    with your friends around.

    Are you afraid,
    I’ll say the wrong thing.
    That they won’t like me
    or the way I sing?

Baby, I’m good enough to show off.
Darlin’, I want to be your prize.
I know I can make your friends laugh.

    Babe, I know it’s true,
you like to answer my calls.
    But when someone’s home,
    you disconnect the phone.
    Are you afraid,
    I’ll say the wrong thing.
    That they won’t like me
    or the way I sing?

Baby, I’m good enough to show off.
Darlin’, I want to be your prize.
I know I can make your mother smile.

    Babe, I know it’s true:
    You love me too.
    But you hide your heart
    away in the dark.
    Are you afraid,
    I’ll say the wrong thing.
    That they won’t like me
    or the way I sing?

Friends, I’m happy to announce that I’ve completed a new digital album, an EP called “For Ellise”. This is the Ellise it’s for. This beautiful muse has spent many evenings talking with me about life and love, and each of the dreamy tracks on this EP were written with her in mind. This is the first of hopefully many albums I’ll complete in my new home, and I’d be honored if you all would listen. It’s available for streaming and free download on my Bandcamp page here (just enter $0 as the price). Think of it as an early Christmas present! If you enjoy it, all I ask in return is that you tell others about my work. Much, much love. — Kavalier Calm

Followers, have you ever been in a love like this? Have you ever been trapped in the #friendzone, but it was your own, stupid fault? — KC

         Feelings Like This

He’s the boy of every girl’s dreams:
you can take him home to mom; you can take him in your sheets.
She’s beautiful in a small and shy way:
she’s realer than the rest, not another bitch, Barbie.

They’ve been friends for far too long.
Love’s come upon them like sleep: slow, then all at once.
    They believe they control their feelings;
but feelings like this, they control you.

They try and play dumb, but they can feel the change.
They deny it to their friends, say things are still the same.
But how about that first kiss? And the second one, too?
Is that something “just friends” do?
    CHORUS

His mind flip flops like a fish on land,
and she’s too scared to put the truth in his hands.
    They go back and forth between a laugh and a fight;
they won’t admit that this happiness is right.
    CHORUS

Me: Your imaginary friend told me I should come talk to you.
Girl at the bar: What? I don't have an imaginary friend.
Me: Sure you do. She's been hitting on my imaginary friend for hours.

For certain-tyy and everyone else who’s trying to make a lover out of a friend. — Kavalier
