Tonight’s post is for the gamer girl at insanelygaming. Mallory’s blog shares wonderful video game images and music, including artsy and funny interpretations of classic gaming themes. Seeing her posts make me remember a not-so-distant past when I feverishly gamed. I smile every time I see an image of Ash Ketchum on her blog. One of my all-time favorite games is the Blue Version of Pokémon for Gameboy. I love that game for the same reason I enjoy a lot of minimalistic music; it is so simple to understand and play, yet profoundly imaginative. I wrote this song today for Mallory because her blog made me remember the good times I had playing that game. When I was a boy, the thought of a girl who played video games seemed more mythological and magical than dragons. So, this song posits a ridiculous way I could get Mallory in my life if I lived in the world of Pokémon, using a Ditto. I think anyone can enjoy this tune, but aficionados of the first-generation Pokémon games will revel in the references (I hope the intro/solo is recognizable).      Ditto

I’m tired of living a Blue Version life.
Day after day, everything appears more wild.
I’m gonna hang up my red cap, and quit the gyms
‘cause I got a plan to fill my life with love again.
I’m gonna catch me a Ditto and have it read your website.
And when it transforms into you, I’ll ask it to be my wife.

Cause I don’t got to catch them all.
I just got to catch one like you.

We’ll settle down in Pallet Town, and I’ll build a bird house.
Pidgeys will come from all around to play in our yard.
We’ll grow Cut flowers in the garden and go Surf at the beach,
and we’ll Fish with my Old Rod for Magikarp.
We’ll go spelunking in caves with our Flash(lights),
and Dig our escape from all those Zubats.
CHORUS

On days you don’t feel special, I’ll brew you elixirs
to restore your PP (and your feelings for me).
We’ll teach you how to swallow your laughter,
so you don’t ever return to your true form.
I’ll finally be a Master of a household.
You’ll fill every page of my heart’s Pokédex.

Help me write a song, Pokemon fans!

I want to write another song for the Poke-community, but I’m having trouble thinking of a central idea. I’m hoping some of you can inspire me by answering this post. Which Pokemon is your favorite and why? What’s your favorite moment in the games or anime? You can also just share random Poke-words you think would be fun in lyrics. To get a sense of how I work, you can listen to my first three Pokemon songs here; one was about using a Ditto to get the girl of my dreams, the other was a love song based on HMs/TMs, and the most-recent one was about a girl…or Pikachu? Thanks in advance for your input! I’ll devote this song to any bloggers whose ideas I use. — K.C.

I often daydream about having Pokémon. This would be embarrassing, except I know many people reading this wish for the same thing. I don’t wish I lived in the Poké-universe, though. I want to train and use Pokémon in our world. I wrote a song about this desire—imagining what it would be like to have a bunch of Pokémon and all the good things we would do for people in need. This song could have been an hour-long epic because every Pokémon has a practical use; so, I just constrained the lyrics to some of my favorites and some of yours. I devote this tune to those of you who told me how you would use a Pokémon in real life, and to my favorite blogs with inspiring Poké-content: gottacatchemall, reblogallpokemon, pokemonpalooza, pokemon-personalities, fypblog, and thenintendard.      Poké-friends (Call On Us)

My poké-friends and I help who we choose:
needy souls who need a poké-move
to better their fortune and better their luck.
Yes, those in need call on us.

I train Arcanine for the blind,
and my Squirtle helps fight fires,
and my Charmander starts them when the power’s out.
My Tropius and I visit hungry children;
they feast on his fruit, and their spirits soar
when he gives them rides up among the clouds.

They know that we care.
They know we do all we can.
CHORUS

I lend Chansey to doctors to heal the sick,
and my Snorlax teaches sleep to insomniacs,
and my Diglett digs foundations for new schools.
I send Blaziken to artist colonies,
and he inspires them with his martial art.
His fire burns away their writer’s block.

I asked my friend Aliya at the awesome blog Pokemon-personalities for ideas for a new Poke-song. She suggested this post might inspire me, and it did. You know when you are mad—and you want to be mad—but your best friend makes you laugh? When you just can’t help but feel better? I think this image captures that magic. Pikachu was such a good friend for Ash; he never let Ash give up hope. So I wrote a song about their friendship. Can you spot all the Poke-references in the lyrics?      Best Friends

To be the very best, like no one ever was,
we need friends who believe in us
to tell us dreams are like Butterfrees:
they’re only caught in a net that swings.

When our heart is weak, good friends make it beat.
They bolt and shock us with lightning
‘til we believe.

To earn every badge of courage you can
takes a good friend’s helping hand.
On sad days they say, “You won’t catch them all
if you give up throwing the ball.”
CHORUS

‘Cause life’s an adventure, life’s a quest,
and for it we need friends who are the best.
