Tonight’s song is about a girl…or Pikachu? I focused on the classic character and Poke-language while I wrote the lyrics to this love song: “Electric Mouse”. I’ve italicized the lyrics where I’m specifically referencing Poke-lore or a moment in the show or video games. Some are obvious, and others are subtle; do you understand them all, true fans? I’m devoting this song to some of my favorite Poke-blogs, which everyone should check out: pikachusblog, f***-yeahpokemon, pkmnblue, pokemonforever-, pokemonftwlulz, allpokemonallthetime, pokemonpalooza, all-that-is-pokemon, and nerdchallenge.      Electric Mouse

Your lightning bolt-looks and swift wit
have a special power over me.
When you blush, sparks fly
from the red on your cheeks.

Electric mouse, I choose you. Won’t you choose me?
Electric mouse, I choose you. You’re all I need.

You refuse to live in a bubble;
you’re strong and want to stand on your own.
Well, I ain’t asking you to evolve;
I just don’t want to stand alone.
Even the toughest sometimes need a hand
to fight off Spearow.
CHORUS

I bet those other cats—them Meowth
promise to fly you away in a Team Rocketship.
But I’ll stand right here on the ground
and work to grant your every wish.
Let’s train to fight and and train to love;
I know we’ll be the best there ever was.
CHORUS

My latest track “Eeveelution” combines the input from a number of fellow Pokemon lovers. I realized reading their song ideas that we are all essentially Eevees: normal-types who want to grow and evolve, be unique and different. We are searching for the special stone—the spark—that helps us find our true self. My song is about the many things that lead people to evolve, all told through references to classic episodes in the Pokemon anime. Some of us grow up because of a coming-of-age ritual (like Bulbasaurs), because of competitive spirit (like Ash’s Charmeleon), or because a mentor pushes us (like Lt. Surge); others grow up when they come in contact with a special, magical item. I evolved when I first held a guitar; maybe for you it was a paint brush, camera, or fresh ingredients to cook with? I hope my song encourages you to find whatever will help you evolve into your stronger, bolder form. I happily devote this song to gamermusic and weightless-hope for encouraging my Poke-songwriting, and to these bloggers for giving me lyric ideas: probablyadragon (Raichus rock!), purplebloodedmajesty (Eeveelution; how punny!), kingdomwho (Oak’s echoing words), nubville (Charmeleon’s rage), and -acrey (Volcarona’s Fiery Dance).      Eeveelution

All around me are normal type people:
Eevees just waiting to evolve.
We are all searching for a special stone
that brings out the best in us.

I want to be like Bulbasaur and let my bulb bloom
and shoot my SolarBeam to the moon.
I wish we were invited to an evolution ceremony
that brings out the best in us.

Maybe I can be motivated by jealous rage
and learn to fly just like Charmeleon.
We should find the Aerodactyl that wakes our inner Charizard,
that brings out the best in us.

Maybe I need a trainer like Lt. Surge,
a man with a whole lot of guts.
We need someone that pushes us to become Raichus,
that brings out the best in us.

Oak’s words echo in my head: “There’s a time and place for everything.”
But I want to grow up, I want to evolve; I’m so tired of waiting.
Anyone can be a Larvesta, the world is full of bugs;
I want to be a Volcarona with a Fiery Dance; I want to be like no one ever was.

To every Eevee listening to this song,
I’m afraid its now through.
This guitar and these words brought out the best in me,
and I hope they bring out the best in you.

Cosplayers, this love song is for you. I was first inspired to write a song about cosplay when I saw breams’ blog a couple weeks ago. Since then, I have been reading these great blogs for more lyric ideas: gammagahato, fyeakkickasscosplay, fuckyearfinalfantasycosplay, daily-pokemon-cosplays, cosplay-society, loverscosplay, cutecosplayers, and thelittlecosplaythings.      More Than Pretend

When we met, you were so happy
to meet someone who could play Vash the Stampede.
When we met, I was just happy
that somebody was talking to me.

When we’re together, we play hero and heroine.
But just once I want to play boyfriend and girlfriend.
How do I tell you my love is more than pretend?

We’ve been Aerith and Cloud, Ash and Misty;
we’ve gone to Comic-con and costume parties.
You do my make up, and I dye your hair.
You laugh as I brush it with my hands.

CHORUS

And you try on your costumes right in front of me.
Do you think I’m a robot? That I don’t have feelings?
Well, I can compute every last inch of you,
and it fills me with joy, and it fills me with hunger.
A hunger to be real.

So I go online and buy a bow and arrow,
a pair of gold boots, and little wings.
And I go to your room, and I sit you down,
and at the top of my Cupid lungs, I sing:

CHORUS
Do you understand? This isn’t pretend.

And you grab an arrow out of my quiver,
tuck it under your arm and say, “Yes.”
And you give me a hug and a kiss on the neck,
and then I know that we’re more than pretend.

My newest #Pokemon song is about Team Rocket. I tried to write a song from their perspective, and in doing so, I realized that the Poke-crime syndicate may not be as evil as it seems. After all, many of us go to extremes to acquire wealth. And we all exploit the world’s natural resources for our own good—be it for electricity or medical testing. So are we really any better than the members of Team Rocket? I accidentally got very political pointing out the flaws in our criticisms; all the election buzz must be having an effect on me. I dedicate this song to aprilrose19 because she first suggested that I write a song about Team Rocket. I also dedicate this song to these blogs I’ve found recently with rad, relevant Poke-content: f***yeahpokevillains, f***yeahjessieandjames, fyteamrocket, rarecandytreatment, fypblog, and diglettcave.      Team Rocket

All you trainers, would-be masters, think us evil
‘cause we steal and exploit Pokémon for profit.
But all Pokémon exist for the glory of Team Rocket.
We are all just like Meowth, waiting for a Pay Day.
Some go to Game Corner and play the slots; we steal our way.
It’s hard to make a living, and that’s why we say:

To protect the world from devastation!
To unite all peoples within our nation!
To denounce the evils of truth and love!
To extend our reach to the stars above!
We must steal every one!

All of you are so Pokémon rich, you have more than you can carry;
Giovanni wants to spread the wealth rotting on your PC!
Robin Hood proved it’s okay to be a thief.
You all act high and mighty, but we know the ruse:
you love power, energy, and fossil fuel.
Pokémon are just a resource for us to use.
CHORUS

Animal experiments are fine if you profit from their finds.
You don’t care that your acne cream was tested on chimps and mice;
so why pretend you’re sad when we test on an electric-type?
If you are all so disgusted by what we do,
then tell me why everyone wants to catch Mewtwo?
We aren’t fooled. We know the truth:
CHORUS

Poke-fans, can you spot all the Poke-references?

Recently, I received an encouraging message about my music from CT at ctchrysler. When I bounced to his blog to say thank you, I fell into a world of beautiful art and music. I asked CT if I could write an audio response to a bit of his visual work, and he pointed me to this beautiful image of a woman. I instantly felt a darkness and a pain surrounding this character, and CT told me he imagined her as someone who had been wronged so many times in life that she “died and became a vengeful spirit.” I thought about her for days. She wouldn’t let me sleep. So late last night, I climbed out of bed and wrote this spoken-word piece. I used near-rhymes and broken meter to create clunky and painful dissonance. I recorded it in my best, eerie monotone. It’s morbid. So wonderfully morbid. I won’t apologize for this, but I will warn my followers that this isn’t my typical happy stuff. I have a deep passion for horror films, and it was fun to try my hand at the genre. And before you ask: no, I do not condone suicide. I do think revenge is pretty awesome, but considering most of us probably lack the magical ability of the girl in my story, I would say the best way to get revenge is to live. Flourish, be successful, and rub it in the face of your demons. Anyway, thanks for inspiring me, CT. Much love, everybody. — Kavalier Calm

I asked my friend Aliya at the awesome blog Pokemon-personalities for ideas for a new Poke-song. She suggested this post might inspire me, and it did. You know when you are mad—and you want to be mad—but your best friend makes you laugh? When you just can’t help but feel better? I think this image captures that magic. Pikachu was such a good friend for Ash; he never let Ash give up hope. So I wrote a song about their friendship. Can you spot all the Poke-references in the lyrics?      Best Friends

To be the very best, like no one ever was,
we need friends who believe in us
to tell us dreams are like Butterfrees:
they’re only caught in a net that swings.

When our heart is weak, good friends make it beat.
They bolt and shock us with lightning
‘til we believe.

To earn every badge of courage you can
takes a good friend’s helping hand.
On sad days they say, “You won’t catch them all
if you give up throwing the ball.”
CHORUS

‘Cause life’s an adventure, life’s a quest,
and for it we need friends who are the best.
